From the Savannah to the Heart of Kenya: My Unforgettable Journey
There are some trips that change your perspective, and then there are journeys that leave a permanent mark on your soul. My time in Kenya has been exactly that—an unbelievable whirlwind of breathtaking landscapes, massive skies, and moments that felt straight out of a storybook.
An adventure this big is best shared, and I was incredibly lucky to be part of an extraordinary group. This journey wouldn't have been the same without the amazing Take Heart Africa team. Together, we traded our everyday routines for dusty trails, early morning wake-up calls, and a shared mission that brought us closer with every passing day. Navigating layovers, sharing the back of safari vehicles, and working side-by-side created bonds and memories that we will be talking about for the rest of our lives.
If you’ve ever wanted to truly feel alive, you need to witness the magic of East Africa. Here is a look inside the amazing journey we’ve been on.

🎈 A Bird's-Eye View: The Hot Air Balloon Ride
If you ever get the chance to float above the Maasai Mara at dawn, take it. No questions asked.
Waking up in the pitch black and hearing the roaring burners inflate the balloon in the crisp morning air was pure anticipation. But once we lifted off? Complete, serene silence.
Floating effortlessly above the savannah as the sun cracked open the horizon is a core memory now. From up there, the scale of Kenya truly hits you. We watched the golden morning light spill across the plains, tracking herds of elephants and wildebeest moving below us like tiny dots on an endless green canvas. It felt like watching the earth wake up from the best seat in the house.

🏠 Hands in the Earth: Mudding Jane's House
Of all the moments that grounded us on this trip, nothing compared to the day we rolled up our sleeves to mud a house for Jane.
Mudding a home is a beautiful, traditional process, but doing it firsthand is an entirely different story. We got our hands dirty, mixing the earth and working alongside the local community, smoothing the walls layer by layer. There was so much laughter, sweat, and a beautiful rhythm to the teamwork.
Standing back to look at the finished walls, it hit me how much love and effort goes into creating a safe, warm space. Seeing what that home meant to Jane was an incredibly profound moment. It wasn't just about building a structure; it was about building a community and letting her know she is seen and supported.
🏫 The Heart of the Journey: Visiting the Schools
The spirit of community carried over into our time visiting local schools and spending time with the children.
Walking into those classrooms alongside the team, we were met with a wave of pure joy, brilliant smiles, and the most beautiful, energetic songs of welcome. The kids have an infectious enthusiasm for learning and life that is completely inspiring. Hearing them laugh, sharing stories, and seeing firsthand the incredible dedication of their teachers was deeply moving. It was a powerful, grounding reminder that the best travel stories aren't just about the landscapes you see, but the beautiful souls you connect with along the way.
📸 The Call of the Wild on the Ground
Between our days in the communities, the wildlife encounters continued to be absolutely surreal. From the vast plains of the Mara to the unique landscapes of Laikipia, being eye-to-eye with nature was unforgettable.

The Magic: Sitting quietly in a safari vehicle just yards away from a pride of lions.

The Scale: Watching families of elephants move gracefully through the bush right in front of us.

Slowing Down at Camp
Between the early morning balloon launches, school visits, and dusty game drives, some of my favorite moments have been the quietest ones.
There is nothing quite like sitting back at the safari camp as the sun goes down, listening to the distant sounds of the bush, and just reflecting on everything we've experienced. Cell service might be spotty, but the connection to the world around you is at an all-time high.

The Takeaway: Kenya has a way of capturing your heart when you least expect it. It’s loud, wild, deeply peaceful, and stunning all at once. We are leaving a piece of our hearts here, but we're taking home a lifetime of memories—and a camera roll that absolutely does not do it justice.
